Your first step into the world of beekeeping

Basic beekeeper training

Theory training will be delivered via Zoom and will include

  • Introduction
  • Overview of bees, hive and pests
  • Apiary cleanliness / hygiene / tools
  • Swarming
  • Disease
  • Q & A session

Each of these sessions will be approximately 1hr

There are also a number of videos – available on our website – which help to support novice beekeepers

These include:

  • A hive inspection
  • Frame building
  • Varroa treatment
  • Lighting a smoker

These will be added to throughout the season

Face to face training

As restrictions surrounding Covid 19 are lifted we hope to provide a number of face-to-face training sessions. This will enable novices to experience handling bees and putting the theory into practise. These sessions will take place at Manchester and District Bee Keeping Association (MDBKA) apiary located in Heaton Park at the Dower House M25 2SW. Novices will work in small groups with an experienced beekeeper focussing on:

  • Basic beekeeping techniques,
  • Identifying key features of the lifecycle of the honey bee
  • How to identify signs of swarming and control methods

These sessions will allow novices to build their confidence, share thoughts and ideas and get answers to any questions they may have.

Within the apiary there are 10 quads (a quad is a group of hives) and two hives in an area allowing for disabled access

Practical session requirements:

Novices attending these sessions will be required to have their own:

  • Full length bee-suit
  • Sturdy boots or wellingtons
  • Close fitting nitrile gloves – which can be obtained from the Equipment Store.

It is also important that we do our best to ensure the safety of participants when attending sessions at the apiary. We will be insisting that all present at these sessions provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative test result for coronavirus.

The Cost: £125 per person: which will include a subscription to MDBKA giving access to the web site and the MDBKA Equipment Store. It is also a subscription to the national British Bee Keeping Association (BBKA) which provides hive insurance and a monthly magazine.

Start Date: There will be six Zoom sessions on the following dates, all commencing at 6.00pm: –

26th April 2021     3rd May 2021

  10th May 2021      17th May 2021

  24th May 2021      31st May 2021

Each session will last for approximately 1 hour.
