EFB is caused by Melissococcus pluton bacteria

If a lava ingests an EFB bacterium and the bacteria multiplies it will cause thedeath of the larva  from starvation. The lavum dies in 3-4 days so it will not be sealed into its cell and the bees will remove the body.

The signs of the disease are:

1. Larvae are usually found in contorted positions.

2. The colour changes from the normal creamy white to dull cream, light brown and eventually a greeny hue.

3. Dead larvae have a melted down appearance but still maintain the larvae like shape.

Again D.E.F.R.A. should be notified but the colony will not necessarily be destroyed as treatments are available if the disease is not too advanced.

Both diseases are spread as the bees try to clean out cells. Their mouth parts pick up the spores or bacteria and as they feed the larvae the pathogens become mixed into the larval food.
