The Super Fig 13 Shows a Super frame with a sheet of wired foundation placed in it. The foundation can be bought through M&DBKA or it can be made with the right equipment. Fig 6 shows a frame after the bees have drawn, filled with honey and sealed the comb. The super has the same construction as the brood chamber but is not as tall. It is primarily used for production of honey but can also be used as a supplementary brood chamber. Supers are placed on top of the brood chambers in early Spring to collect the nectar into the hive. As they fill the beekeeper places on extra supers and when convenient extracts honey from them. A full super might contain up to 30lbs (15kg) of honey and it is possible in a good year to have three or more full supers per hive. The Queen cannot lay in the supers because she is restricted by a queen excluder described on the Hive page. |
